THE TAMILNADU DR AMBEDKAR LAW UNIVERSITY, Department of Constitutional Law and Human Rights, PG Departments of Law headed by Prof. Dr. Manohar and the Centre for Security Analysis will set up an International Roundtable on the 29th of November 2006 in the Seminar Hall of the Centre, Egmore Chennai, time 3 pm.

The title of the round table: Human security focused on biomedical ethics. Several different topics will be discussed e.g. status of an embryo, stem cell research.

Invited participants from Europe: Prof. Dr. Dr. Cosimo Marco Mazzoni (Italy), Dr. Dr. Brigitte Jansen (Germany), confirmed.

The deadline for submission of the 3rd Asia-Pacific Computing and Philosophy conference at University of Philippines, Diliman, the Philippines has been extended. Abstracts are being called in all areas of computing and philosophy, and the new deadline is December 15, 2006. Please see the website for more information.

The Center for Information Policy Research, School of Information Studies, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, is pleased to announce Dr. Charles Ess, Distinguished Research Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies, Drury University will lecture on “An Impending Global ICE Age?: East-West Perspectives on Information and Computer Ethics,” as part of his 2006-07 CIPR Information Ethics Fellowship.

A prominent philosopher and information ethics scholar, Dr. Ess is Co-chair, CATaC conferences, Vice-President, Association of Internet Researchers, and Professor II, Globalization and Applied Ethics Programmes, Norwegian University of Science and Technology. He has published extensively in the areas of History of Philosophy, Ethics, Culture, Technology, Computer-Mediated Communication, and Online research ethics.

Dr. Ess was selected as a CIPR Information Ethics Fellow to honor his prestigious contributions to the field of information and computer ethics, and in particular, his work on East-West perspectives on ethics.

While in residence at the CIPR, Dr. Ess will also lecture to SOIS graduate students on different cultural values and communicative preferences and their impact on effective web design. DHARMODYNAMICS
The Fusion of Modern Science and Eastern Religions

The search for the ‘ultimate reality’ seems to have been the epitome of intellectual and spiritual pursuit of humankind since time immemorial. So far, those who embark on such a journey generally have to choose between the two roads: scientific or metaphysical. Dharmodynamics is an attempt to merge these traditionally two separate paths into one.

On the one hand, it retells and explains some of the most fascinating scientific concepts from a metaphysical perspective based on four major eastern religions, namely Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Taoism. The topics discussed are wide-ranging and include, for example, the big bang, the big crunch, the cosmos, black holes, quarks, the Theory of Everything, thermodynamics, entropy, DNA, chromosomes, life, evolution, Darwinism and the human mind.

Conversely, several main religious and metaphysical concepts –ranging from soul, heaven, hell, ghosts, demons, angels, karma, the karmic law, reincarnation, samsara (cycle of rebirth), nirvana, tao, moksha, dharma (nature) and the dharmic law– are reformulated using scientific conceptual framework.
This unique effort to stitch patches of scientific knowledge with eastern religious concepts and metaphysics into seamless whole, resulting in an integrated body of knowledge which encompasses and transcends science as we now know it, is how ‘dharmodynamics’ is defined.

ธัมโมไดนามิกส์ (Dharmodynamics)

อากาศเย็นๆ ไม่อยากออกไปไหน 2-3 วันนี้ก็อ่านโน่นอ่านนี่ไปเรื่อยครับ เมื่อตะกี้ก็เพิ่งอ่านหนังสืออ่านเล่นสนุกๆชื่อ DHARMODYNAMICS จบ ผู้เขียนหนังสือชื่อแปลกๆเล่มนี้คือ Dr. Vuthiphong Priebjrivat

Dharmodynamics เป็นหนังสือที่พยายามรวมความเห็นวิทยาศาสตร์สมัยใหม่เข้ากับศาสนาประเทศตะวันออก ดังนั้นในแง่ของสาระที่อยู่ภายในแล้วเล่มนี้ไม่ใช่เล่มแรกที่มีการเขียนเรื่องแบบนี้ แต่สำหรับผมเล่มนี้เป็นเล่มแรกที่อ่านง่ายและภาพประกอบสวยงามดีมากครับ (ดูใน Acknowledgments แล้วชื่นชมคุณ Denchai และคุณ Sanit ด้านความสามารถการวาดรูปและสร้างสรรค์รูปน่ารักๆเป็นพิเศษ)

คำว่า Dharmodynamics เป็นคำที่ผู้เขียนประดิษฐ์ขึ้นมา เขาบอกว่ามีความหมายเดียวกับกฏธรรมชาติ (law of dharma) ชื่อเรื่องนี้ทำให้ผมคิดอยู่พักใหญ่เหมือนกันครับ ว่าทำไมไม่เป็น Dharmadynamics หรือต้องการจะให้เสียงใกล้เคียงกับ Thermodynamics

เนื้อหาถูกแบ่งออกเป็น 6 บท บทแรกพูดถึงธรรม โดยเริ่มจากทฤษฎีบิกแบง (Bigbang) พูดภาพรวมของจักรวาลวิทยาและไปจบที่ทฤษฎีสำหรับทุกสิ่ง (Theory of Everything) ผู้เขียนได้สร้างแนวคิด Vivergy (พลังชีวิต – the force of life) ซึ่งเป็นหนึ่งใน 3 องค์ประกอบของธรรมชาติที่นอกเหนือไปจาก สสาร และ พลังงาน โดยขยาย Grand Unified Theory ที่พยายามรวมแรงในเอกภพว่าแท้ที่จริงก็มีต้นกำเนิดมาจาก vivergy ซึ่งจุดนี้ผมคิดว่าคล้ายกับกลุ่มที่ยอมรับ Anthropic principle แต่การนิยาม vivergy นี้ทำให้ผมงงมากที่สุดเมื่ออ่านไปถึงบทที่ 6 Nirvana เพราะมีรูปหนึ่งที่อธิบายลักษณะของ vivergy ว่า “ไม่” อนิจจัง (คือนิจจัง), “ไม่” ทุกขัง (คือสุข) และ อนัตตา การสรุปแบบนี้เท่ากับบอกว่า vivergy ก็คือ นิพพาน เมื่อย้อนกลับมาดูบทแรกอีกทีก็เท่ากับว่า gravity, weak nuclear, electromagnetic, strong nuclear ฯลฯ มาจากนิพพาน!!! ซึ่งเท่ากับว่ามันจะย้อนไปขัดแย้งกันเองกับ “สามัญลักษณะ” จุดนี้เป็นจุดหนึ่งที่ผมไม่เห็นด้วยในหนังสือเล่มนี้ (แต่ผมคงบอกว่าความเห็นใครถูกใครผิดไม่ได้นะครับ คุณๆต้องอ่านแล้วศึกษาและตัดสินด้วยตัวคุณเอง)

ที่จริงมันก็เป็นเรื่องธรรมดาสำหรับหนังสือประเภทนี้ที่คนอ่านจะเห็นด้วยหรือไม่เห็นด้วย อย่างไรผมก็ยังชื่นชมและยินดีที่ได้อ่าน Dharmodymics อยู่ดี

สำหรับบทแรกมีประเด็นที่น่าสนใจอีก 1 จุด คือ ตัวทฤษฎีบิกแบงเองก็ยังไม่เป็นที่ยอมรับอย่างเป็นเอกฉันท์จากนักวิทยาศาสตร์ทั่วโลก ยกตัวอย่างเช่น Quasi Steady State Universe หรือ little bang

มาถึงบทที่ 2 เนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับจักรวาลวิทยา บทนี้พูดเกี่ยวกับวิวัฒนาการของเอกภพ วัฏจักรของเอกภพ หรือ การเกิด Big-bang และ Big-crunch สลับกัน หลุมดำ และพหุภพ (เอกภพหลายๆเอกภพ) เช่นเดียวกับ Big-bang การเกิด Big-crunch ยิ่งไม่ได้รับการยอมรับจากนักวิทยาศาสตร์แพร่หลาย เพราะอาจจะเกิด little-crunch อย่างกรณี quasi steady state universe หรือเอกภพอาจจะขยายตัวตลอดกาลและตายในความมืด ด้วยอำนาจของ dark energy ซึ่งทำหน้าที่ anti-gravitation ก็ได้

บทที่ 3 พูดถึงเรื่องชีวิต วิวัฒนาการในแง่มุมเชิงชีววิทยา นิยามของชีวิต ดีเอ็นเอ และกรรม โดยแนวคิดทั้งหมดอิงอยู่กับ vivergy ผู้เขียนได้แสดงความเห็นว่า simple life form เกิดจากการประกอบรวมกันของ สสาร พลังงาน และ vivergy ในสัดส่วนที่แตกต่างกัน ถ้าเป็นรูปแบบสิ่งมีชีวิตที่ซับซ้อน ก็เกิดจากรูปแบบสิ่งมีชีวิตพื้นฐานผนวกกับองค์ประกอบ 3 ส่วนนั้นทับซ้ำขึ้นอีก

ผมลองมองจุดนี้ย้อนในมุมพระพุทธศาสนานะครับ (ต้องขออนุญาตทำความเข้าใจอีกทีว่า ที่เขียนนี่ไม่ใช่เพราะคัดค้านเพื่อหาข้อสรุป “ผิดถูก” แต่พยายามชี้ประเด็นเผื่อว่าคุณๆอยากอ่านแล้วจะนำไปพิจารณาค้นคว้าต่อไป), ชีวิต ในทางพุทธศาสนามี 2 ส่วน คือ รูป กับ นาม, ธรรม ก็มี 2 ส่วน คือ รูป กับ นาม, สสารและพลังงาน เป็น รูป ทำให้เทียบได้ว่า vivergy เป็น นาม และนามที่เป็นองค์ประกอบของชีวิตเป็นนามในกลุ่มที่เราเรียกว่า “สังขตธรรม” จากจุดนี้ถ้าเราจะมองเอาภาพรวมของ vivergy จากที่ผู้เขียนๆ ผมคงสรุปได้ว่า vivergy ได้รวบหัวรวบหางเอานามทั้งที่เป็นสังขตธรรมและอสังขตธรรมมาไว้เป็นกลุ่มเดียวกัน

บทที่ 4 พูดถึงเรื่องมนุษย์โดยเฉพาะ วิวัฒนาการ อารยธรรมในด้านต่างๆ บทนี้ค่อนข้างยาวกว่าบทอื่น และเขียนได้ชวนติดตาม อ่านเพลินมาก ไม่เน้นศัพท์แสงวิชาการเกินไป บทที่ 5 เรื่องกรรม และบทที่ 6 เรื่องนิพพาน 2 บทหลังนี้มีประเด็นที่ผมไม่เห็นด้วยพอสมควร เป็นรายละเอียดเล็กๆน้อยๆที่จะว่าสำคัญก็สำคัญ (อาจจะหยิบมาคุยต่อวันหลังแล้วแต่อารมณ์ วันนี้ขี้เกียจแล้วครับ) แต่ภาพรวมส่วนใหญ่ก็ยังชื่นชม

อย่างที่กล่าว เจตนาของผู้เขียนอยู่ที่ประมวลภาพรวมของวิทยาศาสตร์สมัยใหม่เข้ากับศาสนาตะวันออก (ไม่ได้เจาะจงพุทธ) โดยเขียนเล่าแบบง่ายๆอ่านสบายๆ การเขียนแบบนี้ก็ต้องตัดรายละเอียดที่ซับซ้อนเกินความจำเป็นทิ้ง

วันหยุดช่วงปีใหม่ ระหว่างที่คุณนอนพักผ่อนชายทะเล กางเต้นท์บนภูเขา หรืออยู่เฝ้าบ้าน ผมอยากแนะนำให้คุณหาเล่มนี้มาอ่าน ได้ทั้งความสนุกและสาระ
