This decade there is a unique opportunity to not only mitigate, but correct for historic inequities buried in the data, put in the algorithm, implicit in the model, embedded in machine learning, then wired intricately in neural networks. The opportunity, as new systems proliferate and are being designed, is to revisit old assumptions and conceive of social services with ideas of efficacy and equity at the core–to go beyond only digitizing old programs for ‘efficiency’, which enable a more effective Patriarchy 4.0.

Feminist AI‘s goal is AI harnessed to deliver equality outcomes; designed with inclusion at the core; creating new opportunities & proactive, innovative correction of inequities. The f<A+i>r network focuses on bringing social programs in line with 21st research and values, dedicated to finding ways to make AI technology more effective, inclusive and transformational, not only more ‘efficient’. Alliance seeks to collaborate with communities, practitioners, researchers, scholars and innovators working to springboard from the established ‘what’ of describing harm and ‘why’ harms exist socially or technically, to research focused on ‘how’ course-correcting future harms can happen, and most urgently ‘how’ new data, algorithms, models, policies + systems could be created, then prototyped, and piloted.

Proposals are being called for the “Incubating Feminist AI” project. Successful papers will receive a grant of 8,000 Canadian dollars as a seed funding for their work, which consists of creating a prototype on how the vision of the project can be realized. Papers should present a novel way of how to harness AI to create an inclusive society characterized by gender equality and inclusion of other traditionally excluded groups in society.

Proposals, which must be from a team of at least two partners belonging to two different academic disciplines, must be between 4,000 to 5,000 words long and must conform to the guidelines laid down in pages 11 to 13 of this document.

Teams of investigators in the proposals must be led by a member who is domiciled in the Global South. Due to the ongonig pandemic problems in Thailand, the date of the upcoming Eighth International Workshop on Bioethics, Multiculturalism, and Religion, organized by the UNESCO Biochair in Rome, in collaboration with the Center for Science, Technology, and Society, Chulalongkorn University, has been moved to January 31 to February 2, 2022.

The program and abstracts of the 21st Asian Bioethics Conference, which was held online from August 29 to September 2, can be found here.

Papers are being called for the upcoming 25th Annual Meeting of the Philosophy and Religion Society of Thailand (PARST), which will held online from December 20 – 22, 2021. The time zone of the Meeting will be Bangkok time zone, which is 7 hours ahead of GMT in winter.

Papers on any topics in philosophy or religious studies are welcome. However, the advertised theme of this year’s Annual Meeting is “Research on Religions in Thailand Today”.

Please send an extended abstract to us as an attached MS Word file on or before October 20, 2021. Abstracts must be between one and two A4 pages, including all notes and references.

Papers can be submitted either in English or Thai. We will separate out English-speaking and Thai-speaking paper presenters in separate rooms or sessions.

Those whose abstracts are selected for presentation will be invited to submit a full paper between 10 to 15 pages, APA style, by November 15, 2021, for possible inclusion in the Journal of the PARST after the Meeting. A full paper is not necessary for presenting at the meeting.

ศูนย์วิทยาศาสตร์ เทคโนโลยีและสังคม จัดตั้งขึ้นมาโดยมีวัตถุประสงค์ที่จะเป็นศูนย์กลางแห่งหนึ่งในประเทศไทย เกี่ยวกับการศึกษามิติทางสังคมและจริยธรรมของวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี ทั้งที่เกี่ยวข้องกับสังคมไทยโดยตรง และในบริบทของสังคมโลก ศูนย์ได้รับการสนับสนุนให้เป็น “ศูนย์เชี่ยวชาญเป็นเลิศ” (Center of Excellence) โดยจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย และประกอบด้วยคณาจารย์สี่ท่านจากสามคณะ

ภารกิจประการหนึ่งของศูนย์ได้แก่การการเผยแพร่ผลงานวิจัยของคณาจารย์ของศูนย์ออกสู่สาธารณะ และประกอบกับในปีที่ผ่านมา คณาจารย์หลายคนของศูนย์ได้ร่วมกันทำโครงการวิจัยที่ได้รับการสนับสนุนจากจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัยเช่นเดียวกัน ซึ่งมีหัวข้อว่า “การสร้างสรรค์บรรยากาศที่นำไปสู่การเจริญงอกงามของวิทยาศาสตร์เปิดในสังคมไทย” การประชุมครั้งนี้ จึงเป็นการเสนองานวิจัยตามแผนงานประจำปีของศูนย์วิทยาศาสตร์เทคโนโลยีและสังคม ตลอดจนเป็นการนำเสนอผลงานวิจัยในรอบสุดท้ายของโครงการ “สร้างสรรค์วิทยาศาสตร์เปิด” อีกด้วย

เป้าหมายอีกประการหนึ่งของการประชุมครั้งนี้ นอกเหนือจากนำเสนอผลงานวิจัยออกสู่สายตาของสาธารณชนแล้ว ยังเป็นการสร้างกระแสความสนใจที่จะนำไปสู่การเปลี่ยนแปลงเชิงนโยบาย ทั้งในด้านวิทยาศาสตร์เปิดและด้านอื่นๆที่เกี่ยวข้อง และได้เรียนเชิญผู้มีส่วนเป็นเจ้าของ (stakeholders) ในด้านนโยบายวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี มาร่วมแลกเปลี่ยนความรู้และความคิดเห็นในการประชุมครั้งนี้ด้วย

The Virtual Asian Bioethics Conference August 29 – September 1

This will be a virtual conference on:

Each Day will run for 5 hours (300 minutes) with no break time, starting at:

6:00AM Istanbul = 7:30AM Tehran = 8:30AM Chennai = 9AM Dhaka = 10AM Bangkok, Jakarta; 11:00 KL, Seoul, Beijing, and Manila = 12:00 midday Tokyo = 15:00 Christchurch = 20:00 California (a day before)

If necessary additional day(s) will be added, but we will not have parallel sessions.

Please submit in writing a 300-word abstract in English, which if approved after peer review, will be also included in the EJAIB September 2021 issue. Currently it is planned that presentations will either be assigned to a 20 minute or 30 minutes slot (e.g. 15 minutes with 5 minutes Q&A or 20 minutes with 10 minutes Q&A) – all in plenary. 

The 2021 ABA General Meeting will be held during the conference. We may also accept some papers that are not related to COVID-19 or the current pandemic related issues.

Media: Skype.

We know that some members prefer Skype and some prefer Zoom. (The rationale for Skype is that Zoom is blocked in Iran, among the countries of ABA members that normally participate; and second that the Chat history and Recording is preserved off-line throughout all days for those who are members of the group). Participants will be only able to be added by the secretariat and not by other participants for security reasons.

Rules: The speaker may choose to use visual aids or not.  If possible, the speaker should provide an electronic copy of their presentation (text or slides) in the skype chat; and the presenter may also decide to share screen if their network signal is strong enough. Participants who are not speaking will usually turn off their video and audio (though on Skype anyone can turn off all incoming video if you have a weak signal). The slides may contain words in any language, but nothing obscene.

In case a speaker or person asking a question has privacy concerns they can request the recording be stopped while they make their comment; but in general, if you do not agree to recording please use an unlinked skype user name.

Presenter fees

ABA paid members (any amount): USD50; USD100 for non-ABA members.  An electronic certificate of presentation will be prepared.

Attendance fees

No fee for persons who just wish to attend and do not want a certificate

Certificate fees

USD20 for members who request an electronic certificate of attendance (USD40 for non-ABA members who want a certificate of attendance)

The method of payment will be determined later, and there will be no payment unless the paper is accepted for presentation.  Applications for waiver of payment, or delayed payment because of financial transaction fees and difficulties, will be considered.

Note: Because of the COVID-19 pandemic the ABC that was originally scheduled to be held in Malaysia in 2020 is now planned as an in-person Asian Bioethics Conference in 2022.

The website of the international conference “Nanoethics Asia 2009” has been restored.

Due to the increasing scope of the Center for Ethics of Science and Technology (CEST), Chulalongkorn University has approved a proposal to create a new research center, the Center for Science, Technology, and Society (CSTS), and will incorporate the CEST into the new Center. The CSTS will focus on research on social and cultural aspects of science and technology, in addition to the ethical ones.

Thus, this particular blog will cease to be regularly updated. Information on this website, however, will remain here for archival purposes. You can also access the old website of the CEST here.
